Few collectors realize that the first iconic Uncle Sam image to grace a poster was actually issued not by the Army, but by the Navy only a few days after the declaration of war April 6, 1917. This extremely rare example notes a 1917 copyright by the Leslie Judge Company, NY. It also acknowledges print permission from (a very dissimilar) Uncle Sam cover printed by Leslie’s Magazine the year before. We have only had one other example in the last nearly four decades of business. |
