Title:   THAT LIBERTY PERISH NOT - YMCA - HE SERVES
Artist:   Gil Spear
Category:   WWI USA Causes
Date:   ca.1917
Condition:   Some minor scrapes and scuffs, almost all at edges and corners. Small round defect in right field, not readily noticible. Outstanding and unique.
Size:   20x24"
Comments:   Original art, tempera poster design for the YMCA. Exceptionally rendered original artwork showing a Black American uniformed YMCA volunteer pouring steaming coffee into the cup of a waiting Black soldier, uniformed as a French Poilu. The Black trooper likely actually represents the first Black American Doughboys, who for a time fought on the battlefield in uniforms provided by the French. Little is known about Gil Spear other than his having done a number of illustrations for the YMCA, and at least one published poster. This superb and highly polished original was likely never published, as it shows a neat penciled margin note “Take Out Gun and Bayonet”, which was clearly not done. Special price:
