... IN AID OF BELGIAN REFUGEES “Exhibition and Sale of Mrs. Fiske Warren’s Collection of War Posters and Relics in Aid of Belgian Refugees, Boston, Mass.” A rare, large placard announcing a benefit exhibition. Mrs. Fiske Warren, a Boston socialite, came into international prominence as a model for one of America’s greatest impressionists, John Singer Sargent, and was a major force in both US and UK relief efforts. Benefit sales offering war graphics as symbolically valuable talismans were not uncommon during WWI. Surviving documentation, however, is quite rare. |
